Shoes 4 My Children
In 1989, Shoes 4 My Children, a 501 c3 non-profit organization was founded and operated by CEO, Pastor Bernita Tyler Scott, at Church House of Prayer Bible Study of South Oak Cliff – Dallas, Texas on Wednesday nights. A group of ladies would come to study the Bible, bringing their children with them. At the end of the study Pastor Scott would serve the women and children hotdogs and drink. The children began to love, trust and appreciate the pastor for sharing such love and care so the children began to call her “Aunt Tessie.” They invited their friends to join them for the Bible Study but especially for the hotdogs and drink.
One day, one of the little boys asked her if she could buy him some shoes because his friends and classmates at school would laugh at him and make fun of him because his shoes were so worn, torn and entirely too big. She looked at his shoes and discovered he was right and imagined how he felt because she remembered a similar experience she had in her younger years. She used her money and purchased him a new pair of shoes and soon the word spread that “Aunt Tessie is buying new shoes for kids who need shoes” the beginnings of “Shoes 4 My Children.”
Since 1989, over 100,000 pairs of shoes and other needed items have been distributed to children in Texas. The program is funded by private donors, foundations, corporations and businesses. Pastor Stiggers, cousin of Pastor Scott, invited her to come to his church (Bethel) in Corsicana, Texas to distribute shoes to children in that community. Arrangements were made and more than 100 shoes were distributed to children that needed shoes in that community.
When the tornado hit Lancaster, Texas in April 2012 destroying so many homes and displacing so many families, some known by Lorraine Stiggers who live and worked as a counselor in the district, contacted Pastor Scott, Lancaster ISD, Neighborhood Credit Union, Lancaster Outreach and several area businesses to work collaboratively in helping the students and their families. The support, volunteers and contributions were great. Those who were asked were more than eager to help and willing to give shoes, socks, toothbrushes, t-shirts, snacks, free facility usage, news coverage, photos, flyers, radio announcements, student volunteers and much more. On May 12th and again on July 21st over 1000 pairs of shoes and other items were distributed to children and families in Lancaster, Texas.
We want to thank Pastor Scott for her love, dedication, commitment and vision to help children and their families through the “Shoes 4 My Children” ministry but especially thank the Lord for his many blessings and this particular promise found in His word (Matthew 7:7,8) “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
