In order to expand the horizons of the students and introduce them to life-long adventures beyond the confines of the classroom, we embarked on a project earlier in the school year.
I incorporated the project into the curriculum, especially as it dealt with the writing process from beginning to publishing.
The five students who were enrolled at the time accepted the challenge to write – not just one book but two books; Christmas, written by Kindergarten and Grade 1 students, and 4th of July Surprise, written by grade 4 and grade 7 students. The students worked tirelessly from start to completion. Each day we did a little. Their anxiety heightened as the manuscripts were finally finished and I forwarded them to the publishers. Two days later the questioning began, “Ms. Ellis, did you get our books back as yet?”
After a few weeks, the beautifully bound books were boxed and delivered to the school. These books, written and illustrated by the students of Bethel Seventh-day Adventist Church School will be forever treasured by those who worked on the project, as well as others.
